How To Choose The Right Dining Chair

So you have picked your dining table, now how will you match your chairs?
How do you pick the best style for the best price?
-
Arms or No Arms?
Arms will usually add about 15cm to the overall width of a single dining chair. If space is limited, you may opt for armless dining chairs or only use dining chairs with arms at the head and foot of the table to conserve space.
-
Measure & Test
Chairs and chair arms should be able to slide under your dining table with ease, but they also must have comfortable lap and leg room when guests are sitting in them. If you are unsure of how a chair might sit under the table the easiest way to get out that measuring tape and try and visualise it that way if you are unable to test it out in person.
Don’t forget to also check the comfortability of your chairs. There’s nothing worse than trying to have a dinner party and to have your guests squeaking every time they move or become uncomfortable of your chairs.
-
Upholstery
For a much easier clean up, stick with leather (real or imitation), Ultrasuede, cotton blends or a commercial fabric. Avoid multi-level fabrics or ones with a heavy nap as they will show wear. Man-made fibres such as rayon or polyester are best when combined with natural fibres.
-
Size Matters
I think this goes without saying, but remember to keep your dining table in mind when you are choosing the size and quantity of your dining chairs. Don’t be silly and go overboard with big luxurious, French Provincial dining chairs if you have a small 4 seater round table.
-
Suit Your Style
Above all, whichever dining chairs you pick, make sure the style compliments your dining aesthetic. Remember to consider your space and whether it is formal or informal. Work your dining set into the design and style of the room.
